Prenatal Yoga: 5 Big Benefits

1) Builds stamina, strength and emotional balance

Prenatal yoga helps strengthen the hips, back, arms and shoulders. More stamina, energy and strength is needed as the baby grows within our body. Prenatal yoga makes us strong and helps when it comes to carrying the additional weight. As we get physically stronger, we also become more emotionally balanced. Through focus on breathing and holding each yoga pose, we will be less prone to being emotionally drained due to increases in progesterone and estrogen in our body.

2) Relieves tension and increases circulation

With the increased size of our bellies, more stress is put upon the lower back, hips, chest, upper back, neck and shoulders.  Our hips tighten up and we will have more of a lower back curve as the pressure of the baby's weight increases. Our upper back, neck, shoulders and chest also become tensed as our breasts become larger. Prenatal yoga helps relieve these specific muscle groups in our bodies as well as decrease swelling by increasing circulation within our joints and muscles.

3) Preparation for labor

The breathwork or deep breathing practiced during prenatal yoga transfers into the time of labor and also calms the nervous system. Prenatal yoga breathwork allows one to get accustomed to being comfortable with discomfort. The act of consciously breathing regulates our blood pressure and heart rate keeping us in a parasympathetic (relaxed) mode. A calm and relaxed mommy equates to a calm and relaxed baby.

4) Connection within

A steady prenatal yoga practice gives us a chance to simply slow down and refocus on what is going on within our bodies. It helps connect us with the little one growing within us. Through breathwork and yoga poses, our body awareness increases. With every prenatal yoga practice, the intention is set in taking care of not only yourself, but of baby.

5) Sisterhood

Being in the company of others who understand us and what we are going through can be very comforting. The mental aspects of pregnancy is focused on. Prenatal yoga gives mothers the opportunity to meet building up an inspired sisterhood and uplifting camaraderie.
